We congratulate emergenCITY WiMi Nadja Thiessen on the publication of her book “Gefährdung städtischer Infrastruktur durch Hochwasser - Wahrnehmungen und Bewältigungsstrategien in Mannheim und Dresden 1918-1989”. The publication in the series “Historical Catastrophe Studies” by DeGruyter is based on Thiessen’s completed dissertation project under the supervision of Jens Ivo Engels within the framework of the KRITIS Research Training Group at the TU Darmstadt.

Using the examples of Mannheim and Dresden, two cities that have been affected by cyclically occurring floods since their founding, Thiessen examines how a constant way of dealing with this threat was established in both cities in the period between 1918 and 1989. Thiessen’s study focuses on these handling and coping strategies, taking into account local-specific factors such as the respective urban development and the overarching political and economic conditions.

All information on the book is available on the publisher’s page.
