Smart homes that adapt their heating to the rhythm of their residents, drones that deliver parcels autonomously and robots that perform operations in hospitals: Digital and smart technologies will shape our cities in the future. emergenCITY coordinator Matthias Hollick and Frank Hessel, research associate in emergenCITY, will open their presentation entitled “Resilience and sustainability in digital cities: Wish or Reality?” with a look at the current state of digitalization and visions for Digital Cities. It is part of the lecture series “Sustainability at TUDa” offered for the first time this winter semester, in which the Technical University of Darmstadt wants to make the areas visible in which the university itself acts sustainably. The event is open to students from all departments as well as the public.

The two speakers will explain how the LOEWE center emergenCITY is researching paths to a resilient digital future, the benefits of interdisciplinary collaboration and why it is important to involve the public. Using the “Digitaler Heinerblock” project as an example, they will explain how emergenCITY is providing scientific support to the city of Darmstadt in the digital transformation of a neighborhood. They will show how a local sensor network and a conventional advertising pillar with a digital capital can contribute to increasing resilience and sustainability in the district.
