IANUS stands for scientific and technical peace and conflict research at the Technische Universität Darmstadt. The IANUS Award is dedicated to outstanding qualification work from all disciplines at the TU Darmstadt. The first prize and 500 Euro prize money was awarded to Dr. (des.) Marc-André Kaufhold for his dissertation “Information Refinement Technologies for Crisis Informatics: User Expectations and Design Implications for Social Media and Mobile Apps in Crisis”. The thesis examines the use, barriers and potentials of mobile applications and social media in disaster management. The goal is to support authorities and organizations with security tasks in the analysis of citizen-generated content. Kaufhold is developing a value-inclusive framework for technology design that takes into account social, organizational and technical context factors in disaster situations. This is intended to improve situation awareness, decision making and efficient damage management. The excellent research work contributes significantly to the progress of knowledge regarding resilient infrastructures in the context of emergenCITY.
