When the cell phones ring and the sirens wail today, March 13 at 10:15 a.m., it’s just a practice for an actual emergency. On the Hesse-wide warning day, various warning infrastructures will be tested and citizens will be made aware of the alarm signals. The state-wide warning day, which now takes place every year on the morning of the second Thursday in March, focuses on the testing of regional and local warning systems.
With the Digital Heinerblock mission, emergenCITY is working hands on for local information and warning infrastructures in Darmstadt that can provide important information for the population in the quartier and useful data on the situation for emergency services in the event of a crisis or disaster. This accompanies the urban transformation processes of the Lichtenbergblock in Darmstadt’s Martinsviertel district into a more climate-resilient, sustainable and citizen-friendly neighborhood. With the advertising pillar 4.0 and a network of sensor boxes, the mission is presenting innovative ideas for additional warning systems.
The advertising pillar 4.0 transforms conventional advertising media already installed in the neighborhood into information points for emergency communication. In cooperation with Ströer Media Deutschland, emergenCITY researchers have developed a power-autonomous add-on for the pillars, which emergency services can use to display important warnings for the local population in the Heinerblock. To this end, emergenCITY scientists are testing a network of around 40 sensor boxes in the district. The boxes, which are attached to streetlights, can gather environmental and ambient data to contribute to a more resilient crisis management.
In an animated clip, emergenCITY now presents the project around the Digital Heinerblock mission in more detail. In addition to technical testing and cooperation with Darmstadt’s emergency services, emergenCITY attaches particular importance to informing, sensitizing and involving the local population. As soon as the advertising pillar 4.0 is in place, emergenCITY is planning a survey to find out how the converted column and its warning notices affect the local population.
Ströer experts will add a display, fuel cell and photovoltaics to an advertising pillar on Riegerplatz in Darmstadt. On April 3, emergenCITY will celebrate the installation of the first prototype of the advertising pillar 4.0.
